What is adolescence?
The period of tiem when a person transforms from a child to an adult.
What is puberty?
Physical changes that take place in adolescence.
What is puberty caused by?
Sex hormones
State 3 changes that happen to both boys and girls in adolescence
- Body hair growth
- Body odour gets stronger
- Emotional changes
- Growth spurt
What is the function of the male reproductive system?
Produce sperm cells and release them in a female
What is the function of the female reproductive system?
To produce egg cells and grow a baby long enough so it can be born and survive.
What are gametes?
Reproductive cells
What is fertilization?
The nuclei of the sperm cell and the egg cell join together to create a new organism.
Describe how an egg cell travels along the oviduct
The egg cell have cilia (tiny hairs) that allow it to waft to the uterus
Define Gestation
The time in the uterus from fertilization to birth.
Name the 3 structures inside the uterus
- Placenta- Organ where substances pass between fetus’and mother’s blood, stops infections and harmsful stuff reaching the fetus.
- Umbilical cord- connects the fetus to the placenta
- Amniotic fluid- Protects the fetus from shocks and bumps.
Describe how substances are transferred from the mother to the fetus
The substances are diffused across the placenta to the fetus
