Human Reproduction Flashcards
Is the reproductive system the same in females and males?
No
What does the male reproductive system contain?
glands sperm ducts urethra penis testes
What do the sperm duct and glands do?
The sperm pass through the sperm ducts, and mix with fluids produced by the glands. The fluids provide the sperm cells with nutrients. The mixture of sperm and fluids is called semen.
What does the penis and urethra do?
The penis passes urine and semen out of the man’s body
The urethra is the tube inside the penis that can carry urine or semen.
What do the testes do?
The testes produce millions of male gametes (sex cells) called sperm and make male sex hormones, which affect the way a man’s body develops
What does the female reproductive system contain?
oviducts ovaries uterus cervix vagina
What do the ovaries do?
The ovaries hold hundreds of ova (egg cells). Women have these cells in their bodies from birth, whereas men produce new sperm continually.
What do the oviducts do?
Connects the ovary with the uterus. Often called the fallopian tube. Every month, an egg develops, becomes mature and is released from an ovary. The cilia waft the egg along inside the oviduct and into the uterus.
What does the Uterus do?
The uterus, also called the womb, is a muscular bag with a soft lining. The uterus is where a baby develops until its birth.
What does the cervix do?
The cervix is a ring of muscle at the lower end of the uterus. It keeps the baby in place while the woman is pregnant.
What does the vagina do?
The vagina is a muscular tube that leads from the cervix to the outside of the woman’s body. A man’s penis goes into the woman’s vagina during sexual intercourse.
What happens in a women’s menstrual cycle?
The menstrual cycle is a process that adult human women can go through. The menstrual cycle for a woman will repeat every 28 days while they are not pregnant. During this time, the women’s ovaries create a mature ovum (egg). Then the woman’s body prepares for pregnancy by thickening the walls of the uterus. If egg and sperm do not meet the women will shed the uterine lining, which is called a period.
Fetal development
Fertilised egg divides to form an embryo
Embryo attaches to the lining of the uterus
Develops into a fetus and then a baby.
What is the placenta?
The placenta is an organ responsible for providing oxygen and nutrients, and removing waste substances. It grows into the wall of the uterus and is joined to the fetus by the umbilical cord.
The reproductive system of a child is not mature. It needs to change as a boy or girl develops into an adult, so that the system is fully working. The time when the changes happen is called
Puberty
