ORIGINS OF SELFISHNESS
- rev soc believe that humans are inherently cooperative, capitalism creates selfishness. MARX alienation theory, people turned into commodities and forced to be competitive.
- social dems believe selfishness is a result of poor socioeconomic conditions, which could be addressed through state intervention. CROSLAND says capitalism could coexist with altruism.
- HOWEVER all agree that capitalism does negatively impact human nature
- BUT marx wants revolutionary behaviour, crosland wants to reform to promote cooperative behaviours
PARAGRAPH TWO
DISAGREEMENT ON ROLE OF EDUCATION
- revsoc see education as a tool of class struggle. LUXEMBURG says that it raises class consciousness and empowers the proletariat to revolt
- third way believes selfishness education is key to overcome selfishness and promote equality. GIDDENS says education can help individuals to work together under capitalism
- HOWEVER agree that education is transformative for society
- BUT luxemburg as revolutionary, giddens as reformist and focused on working in existing systems
PARAGRAPH THREE
AGREEMENT ON COLLECTIVE POTENTIAL
- all agree on collective potential of humanity
- REVSOC argue that it is suppressed under capitalism and can only flourish in classless society
- SOCIAL DEM think humans thrive collectively, and redistribution can allow people to support each other under capitalism
- HOWEVER disagree over whether capitalism is irredeemable or compatible
-BOTH emphasise that humans are naturally inclined to work together
