Chapter 4: Human Movement Science Flashcards
Abduction
Movement of a body part away from the middle of the body
Adduction
Movement of a body part toward the middle of the body
Anterior (or ventral)
On the front of the body
Biomechanics
The study of mechanics in the human body
Concentric contraction
The shortening of a muscle.
Moving in opposite direction of force. Accelerates or produces force.
Contralateral
Positioned on the opposite side of the body
Distal
Positioned farthest from the center of the body
Eccentric contraction
The lengthening of a muscle.
Moving in the same direction as the resistance. Decelerates or reduces force.
Extension
The straightening of a joint, causing the angle to the joint to increase
External feedback
External rotation
Rotation of a joint away from the middle of the body
Feedback
Flexion
The bending of a joint, causing the angle of the joint to decrease
Force
An influence applied by one object to another, which results in an acceleration or deceleration of the second object
Force couple relationships
Muscle groups moving together to produce movement around a joint
