Human Geography Population Dynamics Key words Flashcards
Birth Rate
The number of live births per 1 000 people per year
Death Rate
The number of deaths per 1 000 people per year
Natural Change
The change in population resulting in the difference between the birth rate and death rate in a single year.
Life Expectancy
The average number of years of person might be expected to live
Ageing Population
A population with a high percentage/proportion of people aged 65 or over. Population pyramids loses pyramid shape and bulges in the middle.
Youthful Population
A population with a high percentage/proportion of people aged 0-16. Population pyramids have a wide base due to a high Birth Rate. Youthful populations are prevalent in LEDCs.
Emigration
The movement of people from a country or region to live somewhere else for at least a year.
Immigration
The movement of people into a country or region to live for at least 1 year.
Infant mortality rate
The number of children that die before the age of 1 expressed per 1 000 of the population.
Pro-natalist
A population policy that encourages an increase in birth rate to increase the population size.
Anti-natalist
A population policy that tries to reduce the birth rate and therefore reduce population growth such as China.
Skills Test
A policy that limits migration by only allowing people with needed skills into the country to host the economy of that country. It could be a points system based on qualifications or ability to speak foreign languages. Eg. Australia needed hairdressers.
Population Pyramid
A diagram that demonstrates the population structure by displaying the number of males and females at each age category.
