Human Factors Engineering Flashcards

1
Q

Define Human Factors Engineering

A

Application of knowledge of human capabilities and limitations in the design of products, systems, or processes.

The application of these principles
across domains improves ease of use and user satisfaction, while
reducing potential errors and user fatigue.

Q

What is the keystroke-level model” (Card et al., 1983; Kieras, unpublished) of testing?

A

Using this method, it is possible to estimate the time and steps required to complete specific tasks. This method makes the assumption that an expert user would be using the system and therefore provides the optimal or fastest time to complete the task.

Good for defining what functions are amenable to “Hot Keys”

Q

What is the Hick-Hyman law when it comes to usability?

A

User response time varies logarithmically with number of possible responses.

Predicts user response to hierarchies, unfamiliar lists, non-qwerty keyboards etc

Q

What is the definition of Usability? An define each of the attributes.

A

Usability is the effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction with which the intended users can achieve their tasks in the intended context of product use.

Usability IS NOT User Acceptance Testing

1) Effectiveness: The ability of the user to achieve a needed task. E.g. can the user make a new appointment
2) Efficiency: TIme it takes (keystoke-level method for example)
3) Satisfaction: Subjective perception
