Human Evolution Flashcards
Define ‘primatology’ (2)
The Study of primates including the prosimians (lemurs, bush babies and tarsiers) and the simians (humans, other apes and monkeys)
Charles Darwin came up with what three theories? (3)
Evolution
Sexual Selection
Natural Selection
Define ‘evolution’ (2)
The change in inherited or genetically transmitted characteristics of biological organisms over multiple generations.
Eg. Apes becoming humans
Define ‘natural selection’ (4)
V.R.C.P.M.O
Wide range of VARIATION between individuals
They must compete for limited RESOURCES (eg, food, light, mates)
Some may have CHARACTERISTICS enabling them to survive and reproduce more successfully
‘Successful’ characteristics are PASSED ON to offspring
Over time, MORE individuals will have these successful characteristics
OTHERS that are less well adapted and compete less successfully will DIE OUT
Variation - Resources - Characteristics - Passed on - More - Others die out
Define ‘variation’ (4)
Genes + environment.
Caused by genetic mutations within genes and acquired characteristics.
Can be continuous or discontinuous.
Changes in the environment can result in rapid changes in a species
