human defence system Flashcards
what are the three different parts of the defence system
- the general barrier
- non specific defences
- specific defences
what is the general barrier purpose
it serves as the first line of defence for the body and to prevent organisms from entering
examples of general barriers in the body
- skin and mucous that line the respiratory passages serve to keep out microbes
- stomach acids, oils in the skin, and enzymes break down bacteria.
what is the purpose of non specific defence (cell-mediated immunity)
- neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages all kill bacteria by engulfing them
- natural killers that target cells that have become cancerous
what is the purpose of specific defences
- uses anti bodies
- lymphocytes are responsible for this immune response
what are antibodies
Y-shaped proteins that are produced by the immune system to help stop and destroy intruders from harming the body
what are antigens
molecules found on surface of cells and on pathogen; provide an identification system
what does the B cell do
produce Y shaped antibodies
what does the T cell do
- signal an attack from foreign invaders
- produced in thymus gland
