Human Defence System Flashcards
Defence system
Protects the body from disease-causing microorganisms (i.e. pathogens), bacteria, viruses & fungi
Infection routes into the body
Ears, Eyes, Mouth, Sharing needles, infected wounds, genitals, bites, contaminated surfaces
General defence system
They act against all pathogens
What is the general defence system made up of?
It is made up of the body’s natural barriers
Different types of barriers
Skin, platelets, stomach acid, hairs in nose, mucous, cilia, ear wax
When is the specific defence system needed?
Is needed when the general defence system fails
What is the specific defence system made up of?
White blood cells found in the blood
Two types of white blood cells?
Phagocytes (engulf pathogens)
Lymphocytes (produce antibodies which kill pathogens)
Process of the specific defence system?
1) phagocytes engulf pathogens
2) lymphocytes produce antibodies which attach to the pathogens’ antigens & kill the pathogen
3) some white blood cells produce antitoxins
