Human Breathing Flashcards
Where is the respiratory system located?
The chest cavity ( thorax )
Breathing through the nose causes…
The air to be filtered, moistened and warmed
The epiglottis
Prevents food and drink entering the trachea
The larynx
Is the voice box
The pharynx
Is the throat
The trachea
Is the windpipe with bronchi
What does mucus do ?
Traps dust and micro organisms
What is cilia?
They are tiny hairs that sweep mucus out of the airpipes in to the oesophagus
Each lung is enclosed by what?
A pair of pleural membranes and are seperated by the pleural cavity
What are alveoli?
Tiny thin walled air sacs that allow gas exchange
Where does oxygen diffuse to?
from the aveoli to the red cells in the blood
Where does carbon dioxide diffuse?
from the blood plasma in to the alveoli
Where does gas diffuse?
In the reverse direction in the cells of the body
What is breathing in called?
Inhalation or inspiration
What is breathing out called?
Exhalation or expiration
Inhaltion involves?
The brain controls the rate of breathing.
The intercostal muscles and diaghram contract.
The chest cavity gets bigger.
Air pressure decreases.
Air is forced in to the lungs.
Name a breathing disorder?
Asthma
How is asthma triggered?
Allergans like pollon and dust
How is asthma caused?
Smaller bronchioles becoming narrow
How can you treat asthma?
Inhalers
What does the brain control?
Human breathing
What does carbon dioxide do?
It controls gas exchange in human breathing
Exercises increases what?
The rate and the dept of breathing
What is the effect of exercise on breathing rate?
Comparing breathing rates at rest and after exercise
