Human Biology Terminology Flashcards
Dominant
Having the power and influence over the other gene.
Recessive
A gene only heritable when no dominant gene is present.
Allele
Each of the two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise from mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
Phenotype
The set of observable characteristics of an individual.
Genotype
The set of genes in the DNA which is responsible for particular traits.
Theory of Evolution
Process by which organisms change over time as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioural traits.
Natural selection
Process which organisms better adapt to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
Adaption
Feature that’s common in a population because it provides some improved function or fitness.
Mutation
Permanent alteration in the DNA sequence that make up a gene.
Fitness
Ability to survive at a reproductive age, find a mate and produce offspring.
Bipedal
An organism that walks on 2 legs.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid is a double helix stranded molecule that holds our genetic codes.
DNA (Structure)
Sugar phosphate backbone.
Nitrogen based pairs (nucleotides).
