Human Biology Flashcards
(18 cards)
Blood vessels
Tubes that carry oxygen-rich blood throughout your body. E.g., veins, arteries, and capillaries.
Connective tissue
Makes up bones, blood, tendons, and ligaments and parts of organs. Supports, protects, and gives structure.
Muscle tissue
Specialized tissue that allows the body to move. There’s three kinds: cardiac, smooth, and skeletal.
Nervous tissue
Makes up the nervous system, responsible for coordinating and controlling many body activities.
Epithelial tissue
Tissue that covers all body surfaces, makes up the majority of glands, and lines body cavities and hollow organs. Has a variety of functions depending on where it’s located.
Bodily system
Two or more organs working together to do a specific function.
Skeletal system
Your bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage connecting the skeleton. Supports the body and is essential for movement.
Muscular system
System of muscles attached to our bones. Provides strength, balance, posture, movement, heat, and allows u to move.
Respiratory system
All the organs and tissues that get oxygen to your tissues, (including your lungs, airways, diaphragm, voice box, throat, nose, and mouth.)
Cardiovascular system
Carries oxygen and nutrients around the body, also removes waste. Uses blood in a system of blood vessels to do this.
Digestive system
Carries food through the body, sends nutrients to the bloodstream, and gets rid of waste. Made up of the large intestine, small intestine, esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.
Endocrine system
The glands and organs that make hormones and release them. Hormones released control many important functions in the body, including growth/development, metabolism, mood, and reproduction.
Nervous system
Made up of billions of nerve cells that send signals back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body. The brain is The signals send messages to your body to do certain actions.
Immune system
A network of cells, tissues, and organs that protect the body.
Urinary system
Organs that gets rid of unwanted materials from your body. Liver, the kidneys, the large intestine, the bladder, and the skin.
Tissue
Group of cells that work together to perform a specific job. There’s four kinds found in animals.
Organ
A self-contained unit consisting of cells and tissues that performs a specific function in an organism.
Neurons
Fundamental cells of the brain and nervous system that make up nerves.
