Atoms and Molecules Flashcards
Atoms
Tiny particles that make up matter.
Atomic Mass
The number of protons plus the number of neutrons in an atom.
Compound
A substance made up of molecules with more than one kind of atom. All substances on earth except elements are compounds.
Covalent Bond
A type of atomic bond formed when two non-metallic atoms share electrons.
Electron
A very small part of an atom that spins around the nucleus, pulled by the attraction to the opposite charge in protons. It has a negative charge.
Element
A pure substance made up of one kind of atom. The type of an element is determined by the number of protons in its atoms.
Atomic Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, determines chemical properties of an element and its placement on the periodic table.
Ion
A charged atom.
Anion
A negatively charged atom.
Cation
A positively charged atom.
Ionic Bond
An atomic bond between non-metallic and metallic atoms formed from the transfer of electrons between atoms.
Matter
What everything (living and non-living) is made of.
Molecule
Two or more atoms bonded together by chemical bonds.
Neutron
Part of an atom that makes up the nucleus, has no charge (neutral charge).
Protron
Part of an atom that makes up the nucleus, produces a positive charge.
Substance
Matter, (compounds or an element), made of specific atoms.
Nucleus
A dense region in the center of an atom composed of protons and neutrons.
AMU
A unit of measurement for expressing masses of atoms, found by adding the number of protons and neutrons.
