Human biology Flashcards
What is osmosis?
The net movement of water molecules from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration, across a semi permeable membrane, until the equilibrium is established
What is diffusion?
The net movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, until the equilibrium is established
What is facilitated diffusion?
When the substance binds to a specific carrier protein causing it to change shape, and allow the substance to cross the cell membrane
What is active transport?
Carrier proteins use energy from ATP to move substances from low concentration to high concentration
What is vesicular transport?
Energy is used to move enclosed vesicles containing substances such as water enzymes into or out of the cell
What is exocytosis?
When vesicles are used to remove substances out of the cell
What is endocytosis?
When vesicles are used to bring substances into the cell
What is the term for endocytosis involving liquids?
Pinocytosis
What is the term for endocytosis involving solids?
Phagocytosis
What is a concentration gradient?
The difference in concentration between two areas
