What is sociobiology?
Evolutionary theory and genetic inheritance explain the biological origins of social behaviour.
What is evolutionary psychology?
A form of darwinian “natural selection” that is used to explain human behaviour.
What does the male hormone testosterone cause?
Aggressiveness, impatience, and irritability.
What is social learning theory?
People imitate what others do. Family members, friends, classmates, co-workers, media, etc. External social influences will affect human behaviour.
What is G.H. Mead’s theory of nurture?
- Prepatory stage (0-3) - children imitate what they see, while trying to please their parents and other family members
- Play stage (3-5) - Role playing begins and language learning
- Game stage (elementary) - Learning to take multiple roles and playing a role in a group setting
- Primary socialization - when people learn the attitudes, values, and appropriate behaviours for individuals in their culture.
- Secondary socialization - follow primary socialization, occurs through more participation in specific groups with defined roles and expectations.
What is the id?
Driven by the pleasure principle, wants immediate gratification.
What is the ego?
Based on the reality principle. Decides on appropriate course of action that maximizes pleasure and minimizes pain.
What is the superego?
The moral guide to right and wrong, based on ethical principle. It internalizes what others or what society expects of us. Pressures to conform.
