What is sex?
The biological characteristics that make a person male or female.
What is sexism?
The perceived superiority of one sex over the other (usually men over women)
What is gender?
The expectations of behaviour or appearance that we describe as masculine or feminine.
What is patriarchy?
The “patriarch” is usually the head of the household. This notion of the father being the head is extended to other institutions of society where men are placed in positions of power and authority.
What is hegemonic masculinity?
The normative ideal of masculinity that men are supposed to achieve. E.g., aggressiveness, strength, drive, ambition.
What is the typical “macho man”?
Likes cares and motorcycles, drinks beer and whiskey, likes football, watches tv programs with violence, won’t do housework, bullies.
What is emphasized femininity?
Is based on a women compliance with their subordination to men and is oriented to obliging men’s interests and desires. Characteristics include supportiveness, enthusiasm, and sexual attractiveness.
What is the typical “effeminate” woman?
Fine facial features, thin yet shapely, use of makeup and hairstyles to enhance her appearance, gossips with other women, likes movies with romantic themes.
What are examples of gender socialization of children?
Girls play with dolls - boys play with cars
Girls wear skirts - boys wear pants
Boys play hockey - girls figure skate
How can we see gender stereotypes in male advertising?
Male friendships are the focus of the ad, if women are in the ads, they are depicted as ‘hotties’ or ‘bitches’, men in these ads are not married.
How can we see gender stereotypes in music?
In school bands, boys play trumpets and girls play flutes. Boys are more likely to become drummers, girls are more likely to be singers or keyboard players.
What is the relationship between gender and professional sports?
Professional sports are still dominated by men, especially big money sports like football and MLB. Women are better represented as professionals in sports like golf and figure skating.
What is the relationship between gender and work?
Men are more likely to work in primary industries (mining, farming, agriculture. Women are more likely to work in the service sector. Many women have less of a chance in being promoted because they may need to take time off to have children.
