-mayor announced a 15 year plan to develop light rail way line, increasing the capacity of the public transport network.

The rio-niteroi bridge connects rio to the commuter area. This manages transport by reducing pressure on ferry services.
what points could be made about an aging population?
-increased pensions therefore higher taxation
-decline in services for children
-increased pressure on adult children to care for elderly parents
-decrease in unemployment rate however also skills gap due to less economically active people
-increased strain on healthcare
what points can be made about a youthful population?
-much larger workforce
-increase in those of a childbearing age therefore potentially increased unemploymeny
-build more schools and train more teachers
-increased pressure on housimg/ food supplies
what are some migration pull factors?
-good exchange rate
-healthcare in scotland is free
-plenty of available jobs such as in construction
what are some migration push factors?
-not enough jobs
-poor wages
-poor state benefits
what are some migration impacts?
-jobs filled that british people might not do
-overcrowding
-education system may become strained
-multicultural society
-racial tension
Impacts of land degradation?
-Loss of fertile topsoil through water or wind erosion leading to inability of the land to support vegetation
-when crops fail or livestock died off food supply is reduced leading to malnutrition and famine
-rural migration into overcrowded urban areas has caused more pressure on the growth of shanty towns
-farmers have lost their income due to poor crop yields
-conflicts over land/resources causes people to be forced to move and resettle - leading to growth of refugee camps
-desertification is forcing people to move out of the Sahara desert into the sahel
Effectiveness of housing in Rio
Slum clearance was not effective as people would simply move to a new location and it would begin again
Self help schemes are more effective as it gives people a sense of ownership
Pacification was not totally successful as rhe police were accused of violent behaviour
Effectiveness for leith housing
Increased house prices have priced original residents out of the market
The demolition of historic sites has lead to campaigning and conflict including the save leith walk campaign which was successful in preventing the demolition of a historic area
Most improvements have been in keeping with the local heritage of the area
More affluent residents have been attracted to the area which has improved the perception of the area
