How does hypertensive crisis differ from HTN urgency?

A

HTN emergency or crisis is elevated BP with evidence of end-organ damage (brain, heart, kidney, retina). Urgency does not have end-organ damage

A
  • Preload and afterload reducer
  • assess for cyanide toxicity: AMS (restlessness, lethargy), tachycardia, seizure, a need for increase in dose, unexplained metabolic acidosis, especially in those with renal impairment or when drug is used >24 hours
