HSCT and GVHD Flashcards
1
Q
In the first case the patient was diagnosed with AML. Why is remission for AML different than for other cancers
A
Remission is different since there is significant chances prolapse since the person at times has absolutely negligible immune system, if any.
2
Q
What is therapy for AML on top of chemotherapy
A
HSCT, to get the person a good immune system
3
Q
Purpose of SCT
A
- Replacement therapy
- Ablative therapy: HSCs from a person are immobilized into the blood, filtered and collected. The person’s blood cell count is drastically reduced by chemo and the extracted HSCs are then planted.
- Immunotherapy: it leads to graft vs tumor effect so the donated immune system or immune cells are more active towards destroying the tumor than other parts of the body
- Gene therapy
