What is Bioethics?
It is the ethics of life, and how medicine or science can be used to create, protect, prolong, enhance or bring an end to life.
Sanctity of human life
Bible verse
Pope John Paul II quote on the sanctity of human life (transplantation)
Human life is sacred because humans are called into being by God, loved by God and saved by the loving sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
‘But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.’ 1 Corinthians 12:18
‘A sincere gift of self which expresses our constitutive calling to love and communion’
Exodus 20:13 (sanctity of human life)
‘You shall not murder’
Dignity of the human person
Bible verse
Salvation Army Quote
Christians believe that human beings have an inherent and inviolable dignity.
God’s love has been poured into our hearts. - Romans 5:2
‘The Salvation Army considers each person to be of infinite value, possessing inherent dignity’ Salvation Army of Australia
The dignity of the human person quote (image of God)
‘So God created mankind in his image’ - Genesis 1:27
What does organ transplantation involve?
Who supports organ transplantation, according to the National Kidney Foundation?
Removing an organ, tissue or group of cells from one person (a donor) and transplanting them into another person
All Christian denominations support organ transplantation
Transplantation contemporary example (Sanctity)
A Christian adherent from America responded to a plea on social media and offered to donate a kidney to save a stranger’s life (CBN). The donor explained that her faith and desire to follow Jesus’ example compelled her to transplant her kidney.
Transplantation shows respect for the sanctity of life, as it is used to prolong or save the life of another person
Abortion contemporary example
Georgette Forney fell pregant at the age of 16, and went through with an abortion. She now believes babies are a ‘gift from God’, as they are of endless dignity
