What are the four central paradigms?
- Agape love - self-sacrificial love modelled through Christ
- Kingdom of God - sums up God’s ideal for the world
- Discipleship - following the example of Christ (baptism)
- Salvation - Jesus died to liberate humanity from sin
What is Catholic paedobaptism?
- Sacramental receiving of God’s grace
- Liberates children from original sin, enabling them to enter the Kingdom of God
What is the symbol of water in baptism?
Water is an efficacious sign that symbolises the cleansing of sin

- Grace of salvation: babies can’t do anything - it is significant that they are provided with this
Ritual of Baptist Baptism
Testimony of faith given by the adherent
- Expresses how faith in Jesus has transformed their life
Beliefs of Baptist Baptism
- Sola Fide (salvation by faith alone) - central doctrine of protestant movement
- Salvation is achieved at the moment of conversion - not through the ritual itself (not transformative)
- Baptism ushers the Kingdom of God (John 3:5)

- Declaration of faith
- Giving a testimony of experiences

Significant for parents and the wider church
- Celebrate freeing the child of Original sin
Baptist baptism significance to community
Baptist congregations fulfil the Great Commission and celebrate how the faith of the baptised individual ushers in God’s Kingdom (John 3:5).
Contemporary example (97-year-old)
- Micheal Haas is a 97-year-old Lutheran adherent who sought baptism
- Display his faith in Jesus, but through various life circumstances, he had never been baptised
- Micheal Sponsors who wrote the article, depicted his baptism by bringing the verse, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding’ (Proverbs 3:5)
