Flight Crew Hot Seating

  • Should be utilized to max extent possible
  • Hot seat to shutdown without intent of immediate re-launch or to avoid TA
    inspection is prohibited
  • > 2 hour shutdown = TA required
    • Prior to engine start, aircrew shall inspect any areas where service/maintenance was performed
  • During Hot Seat:
    • Should remain in cockpit until relief is outside door
    • Another member of crew required to occupy seat until arrival of relief

          - SDO/ASDO shall not be scheduled to fly earlier then 12 hours after watch
          - Circadian rhythm should be taken into effect

    - Overwater operations involve operating below single engine envelope or overwater flight East of HRBT
    - May be waived by CO/XO OPSO if jumps are in Willoughby Bay and with a SAR boat on station
    - PAX SHALL be outfitted with cold weather survival clothing any time aircrew is required to wear

Confined Area/Unprepared/Slope/DVE Landings

A

DVE: Blowing sand, dust, snow or other obscurants cause pilot to lose visual reference to ground
CAL: Area where approach or departure profile is restricted by terrain or obstacles resulting in vertical or near vertical approach/departure
Unprepared Landing: Landing not specifically designed for aircraft landings

	- If HAC or crewcheif has not conducted 3 NVD DVE landings within 45 days, HAC and Crewcheif shall conduct 3 Day DVE landings prior 
	- All operational and training events shall include SWEEP checks
		- Partly or completely during mission brief
		- Any differences shall be briefed by HAC or mission lead

Precautionary Emergency Landing

A
  • PEL: Landing made when aircraft system or in flight emergency causes the crew to land and discontinue flight. Following a PEL, HAC shall proceed as follows:
    Continued Flight if:
    - cause of problem obvious and corrective action taken
    - If problem not identified or corrected, CO or XO authorization is required. (OIC if practical)
    If further flight not warranted:
    - Notify SDO
    - Maintain comms with SDO/agree on time to reestablish
    - HAC is responsible for security of aircraft

Night Vision Device/HUD

  • NVD’s should be used to the max extent possible

    - NVD’s shall be ready for immediate use
    - NVD’s SHALL be carried on all operational flights based on mission
    - NVD’s SHALL be carried on flights scheduled to land within 1 hour of sunset

  • HAC shall ensure ORM, mission, and area is briefed to SDO
  • Copy of ORM shall be given to SDO. Crew maintains original to assess and revaluate in flight
  • SDO shall annotate crew ORM total on flight schedule

SAR/DUTY Crew

A
  • 24 Hour duty
    • 1 crew for 24 hours or
    • 2 crews for 12 hours
    • Monday-Friday shall have AM/PM crew
    • Saturday, Sunday, and all weekday holidays 1 duty crew should be assigned for no more than an 24 our period
    • AM Crew: Basic Day/DLQ current
    • PM Crew/weekend: Basic NVD, coupler, and NVD DLQ current
    • Shall maintain accurate recall number
    • Standard is 4-alert (airborne within 4 hours)
    • If duty aircraft or aircrew are flying, shall remain within 50 NM and remain up base freq to max extent possible

VIP Procedures

A
  • Should be applied to max extent possible:
    2 Star or below:
    - 1 primary aircraft
    - 1 spinning backup
      3 Star or above:
    
              - 1 primary flying aircraft
              - 1 flying backup/SAR
              - 1 spinning backup 
    
      - Mission Commander shall be designated for all 3 Star and above
      - MC should be copilot
      - HAC’s should be O-5, O-4, or post cruise HAC 
          - SHALL have a post cruise utility Aircrewman familiar with VIP procedures
               - Should plan to arrive 15 minutes early

Flight IVO DC

A
  • HSC-22 aircraft shall not fly within 30 NM of DC, or within DC SFRA (Special Flight Rules Area) unless specifically tasked by higher authority or approved by CO
  • Pilots shall complete FAA course prior to conducting flights within 30 NM or DC, or within SFRA

Thunderstorm Watches and Warnings

A
  • SDO shall monitor all weather forecasts, watches, and warnings by Fleet Weather Center Norfolk
    - Local Thunderstorm watches by NGU not to be confused with convective WW’s issued by National Weather Service
    - T2 = Destructive wind and thunderstorms within 25 NM or expected within 6 hours
    * Ops and Maintenance departments should establish plan
    - T1 = destructive wind and thunderstorms within 10 NM or expected within 1 hour
    * All personnel shall take safety precautions and shelter within hangar
      SDO: 
    
          - Notify CO XO OPSO Maintenance and flight crews
          - Flightline must be evacuated during T1 unless
              - Verification that not lighting strikes during past 10 minutes within 10 NM radius of squadron via FWC website AND CO’s permission
