HS2339 Week 1 Inorganic Material Structure and Properties Flashcards

1
Q

Different rock types

A
  • Igneous rocks formed by volcanic ACTIVITY UNDERGROUND depends on rate of cooling
  • broken down by climate, water and weathering, forms them into rock strata, sedimentary
  • metamorphic, movement moves sedimentary rock strata and heat and pressure alters properties of rocks

Q

Stone properties (example Granite)

A
  • granite is an igneous rock formed underground, mostly silicon dioxide and potassium aluminium silicates
  • low porosity
  • layering can occur due to underground action
  • decay resistant, hard to work

Q

glass like igneous rocks ie obsidian

A
  • cooled lava, not enough time to reorganise into crystal structures, more glass like, a supercooled liquid
  • flint, amorphous structure found as deposits in sedimentary rocks, found as nodes, can be work like obsidian

Q

Limestone properties

A

(also dolomite)
(notice the layers and planes become evident when sedimentary rock is weathered, as rocks are varying in hardness)
(can be stained with iron impurites)
