HRP Flashcards
Describe the key histological features of the vas deferens
- Thick walled muscular tube
- Epithelial lining- pseudostratified columnar
- Layers of longitudinal and circular smooth muscle - inner and outer are longitudinal, intermediate is circular
- Lumen stellate in shape (like a star)
Key histological features of the prostate
- The prostate gland is made up of glands and stroma (supporting tissue)
- Serous alveoli with very much infolding of epithelium
- Fibromuscular stroma with descrete bundles of smooth muscle fibers
- Amorphous eosinophilic masses, called coprora amylacea, in the alveoli in older men
Key histological features of the testis
- Convoluted (folded) semineferous tubules cut in various planes of section
- 4-8 layers of germ cells occupying the space between the basement membrane and the lumen
- Spermatozoa in the lumen and leydig cells in the interstitial spaces between the tubules
- Progression of development towards the lumen (from spermatogonia A or B to Spermatozoa (mature))
What is the Rete testis? What does it look like histologically?
A network of small tubes in the testicle that helps move sperm cells (male reproductive cells) from the testicle to the epididymis.
Histology:
- Plexiform arrangement of channels
- Highly vascular collagenous connective tissue containing myoid cells
- Single layer of cuboid epithelial cells with microvilli and single cilium - cilia help aid the progress of spermatozoa
- Myoid cell contraction
- Epithelium reabsorbs protein and potassium
Key histological features of the Epididymis
- No progression of development towards the lumen
- A number of tubules in varied section
- Lining of the epithelium is pseudostratified tall columnar with long microvilli inappropriately called non-motile cilia (sterecilia)
- Lumina usually contain bunches of spermatozoa (sperm is stored here)
Histology of seminal vesicle
- Epithelial lining- Pseudostratified tall columnar
- Secretary cells with lipid droplets in the cytoplasm
- The lumen of seminal vesicle is highly irregular – Honeycombed appearance
Endometrial polyp
Ovarian carcinoma
- Large ovaries
- Thickened external (Serosal) surface
Uterine Leiomyoma / Uterine fibroids
- Benign smooth muscle growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years.
- Have a defined edge to them
- Develop in the myometrium
In which phase of the menstrual cycle are there mitoses in the endometrial epithelium?
Proliferative/follicular
- Straight glands
In which phase of the menstrual cycle are there vacuoles in the endometrial epithelium?
Secretory / luteal phase
- tortuous and dilated glands
What is this MRI showing?
A pathology in the seminal vesicle
Prostatitis histology
- Macrophages in stroma (purple)
- Lymphoid aggregates are not specific for prostatitis
Prostatic adenocarcinoma histology
Pseudoacinar spaces - may be crowded but even still a bit of stroma separates them.
Testicular Seminoma
