What is dyspepsia?
Group of symptoms describing bad digestion
eg. abdo discomfort, retrosternal pain, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, bloating, fullness, early satiety, heartburn

When to refer for endoscopy for dyspepsia?
ALARM symptoms
What is H.pylori?
Gram negative, spiral-shaped, microaerophilic, flagellated
What is the only thing H.pylori can colonise?
Gastric type mucous (acidic environment)
What is involved in non-invasive diagnosis of H.pylori? (3)
Serology - IgG against H.pylori
Urea breath tests
Stool antigen tests - ELISA (must be off PPI for 2 weeks)
What is involved in invasive diagnosis of H.pylori? (3)
Histology (gastric biopsies stained for bacteria)
Culture of gastric biopsies
Rapid slid urease test (CLO)
What is the main failure of eradication therapy? (2)
Resistance to antibiotics & poor compliance
