-countries divided into states with differently run governments (eg America)
-each state controls its own police, education and laws (eg marriage, crime)

-the Occupation Statute set up in 1949 and allowed the USA, Britain and France to control the area until it was declared a sovereign state in 1955

What is the system of government in the FRG?
-Basic Law->usually flexible->applies to all Germans even ones living in the DDR (East)
What did the FRG recognise needed to be changed as protection from extremist groups?
-FRG recognised that things like proportional representation allowed more extremist voices and led to Hitler gaining power->wanted to prevent that but put in place democracy but protect it from extremist groups

-a system of government used by the FRG/a temporary constitution for how to rule Germany

-Chancellor because the President has more limited power they want someone who could properly govern not just elected due to popularity
