How Tumor development occurs - Chapter 9 Flashcards
Genetically Altered Cell:
Stage 1:
Cell with a genetic mutation that increases the tendency to divide when it should generally rest.
Hyperplasia:
Stage 2:
Increase the number of cells in a tissue or organ beyond the normal range.
Dysplasia:
Stage 3
Abnormal development or growth of cells, tissues, or organs, characterized by changes in size, shape, and organization and often considered precancerous.
In Situ Cancer (Carcinoma in Situ - CIS):
Stage 4:
Abnormal cells are confined to their site of origin, not invading nearby tissues. A precancerous condition that has not penetrated the basement membrane.
Invasive Cancer:
Stage 5:
Cancer that has penetrated and spread beyond its initial tissue or organ, infiltrating nearby structures and potentially metastasizing to distant parts of the body through blood or lymphatic systems.
