How To Sample Flashcards
Samples that measure biodiversity
Chose an area
Count number of individuals
Use a process (plants=quadrat. Flying insects=sweep net. Ground insects=pitfall trap. Aquatic animals=net)
Repeat process
Use results to get an estimate of total amount of species
Compare results with the same technique
Random sampling
Avoids bias. Use random number generator to derive coordinates
Non random sampling
Systematic- samples are taken at fixed intervals often along a line E.g quadrat placed along a transect.
Oppurtunistic- sample chosen by the investigators. Will be biased
Stratified- different areas are sampled separately in a proportion to their part of the habitat as a whole
Simpson diversity
D=1-(sum of: (total in one species/total number of organisms)²)
Proportion of polymorphic gene loci
Number of polymorphic gene loci/total number of loci
Standard deviation
S=square root of the sum of (x-mean)² / n-1
