How to measure waves in a solid Flashcards
What are the aims of the experiment?
To measure the frequency, wavelength and wave speed of the waves in a string
What is the equipment needed for the experiment?
.cable
.vibration generator
. string
.wooden bridge
.weights
.power supply
.pulley
.bench
What is the first step of the method?
Attach the string/ cord to a generator then to a pulley, using a 200g hanging mass to pull the spring taut. Also, place a wooden bridge under the string/cord near the pulley.
What is the 2nd step of method?
Switch on the vibration generator and adjust the wooden bridge until stationary waves can clearly be observed.
What is the 3rd step of this method?
Measure the length of as many half wavelengths (loops) as you can then adds the numbers together and divide by the number of loops. This will be half the wavelength, so doubling this will give the wavelength.
What are the least number of half lengths you would ideally want?
5
How will you figure out the frequency?
It’ll be the frequency of the power supply.
What is the last step of the method?
Calculate the wave speed by doing wavelength x frequency.
You could also use a signal generator attached to a vibration transducer to generate vibrations for this experiment
The vibration transducer converts the signals to vibrations. You would need to adjust the frequency on the signal generator to change the wavelength, until there appears to be a clear wave on the string.
What is a hazard of this experiment?
the cord snapping
What is a consequence of the hazard?
damage to the eyes
What are control measures to prevent the hazard from occurring?
Wearing eye protection e.g. goggles. Or, a safety screen.
