League of Women Voters (LWV)
What was the LWV (League of Women Voters) divided over?
-the organisation was divided over campaigning for political representation eg women in positions of power
What did Jane Addams want to campaign for in the LWV?
Jane Addams wanted women to campaign for women’s issues
What did Carrie Chapman Catt want to campaign for in the LWV in comparison to Jane Addams?
-wanted to integrate into national political life and develop into equal citizens
Why was the first election’s turnout so low? (4)
-the first election in 1920 women were a part of was low and women continued to campaign for social issues (working conditions, church activities and education etc) -> not very interested in political issues
-working class more focused on getting food on the table
-weren’t educated on politics/didn’t want to go against their husbands ideas
-large numbers of women didn’t care for it

-based in the North
-white middle class women
What did the DAR represent?
-more conservative ideas
What was the result of different states having different rules?
-due to the laws being able to be adapted women eg could own land in one state but not the other

-equal pay - economic but requires legislation
-equity - level the playing field with men
-political representation - people courting their vote, advocating for women’s issues
