How mentorship has affected my professional or personal life Flashcards
What is one specific way in which mentorship (mentor/mentee) has significantly altered your professional or personal life?
Sort of ironic to bring this up because it didn’t end up taking the path I thought it would - but I think I never would have done grad school without the mentorship of peers who made me realize “I can do that if they can”, and later the mentorship of scientists once I’d dipped my toe in - and doing that opened up some quite rare and special opportunities in the field and the lab. So even though I eventually switched careers, after some of the crazy intimidating things I’d done in research the experience made me feel like learning software development would be… at least fairly straightforward. It gave me confidence that I could do the hard things. I think that was the biggest course-altering effect of mentorship, because prior to university I’m sure I had never even met someone with a PhD or even a Master’s degree. I don’t think I would be working in a STEM field if it were not for that.
