Activation Energy
The minimum amount of energy required for particles to react on collision.
How does concentration affect reaction rate?
Increasing concentration increases number of collisions and increases rate.
How does temperature affect reaction rate?
Increasing the temperature gives the particles more energy, makes them move faster and they collide more often. More particles have energy greater than the activation energy so there are more successful collisions.
How does a catalyst affect reaction rate?
Catalysts change the rate of chemical reactions but are not used up during the reaction. Different reactions need different catalysts. Catalysts are important in increasing the rates of chemical reactions used in industrial processes to reduce costs.
How does pressure affect reaction rate?
Increasing pressure increases the number of collisions as the particles are closer
How does surface area affect reaction rate?
Increasing pressure increases the number of collisions as there is more surface exposed
How do you calculate the rate of reaction?
amount of reactant used or product formed/time

Collision Theory
Chemical reactions can only happen if reactant particles collide with enough energy. The more frequently particles collide, and the greater the proportion of collisions with enough energy, the greater the rate of reaction.
What is a catalyst?
A substance that can increase the rate of reaction without being used up itself
