THE WARSAW PACT

  1. controlled all defense matter
  2. stopped all communications with NATO

EFFECTIVE: prevented any serious uprising or attack as they had considerably more power. Stopped any capitalists ideologies from spreading and made communsim grow stronger.

HUNGARY UPRISING 1956

  1. launched attack as they believed that Hungary could undermine communism
  2. 3000 were killed

EFFECTIVE: even though Stalin was dead it show how strong Moscow was.

HOWEVER: The poland uprsing showed that there was a lapse in control and Moscow was prepare to comprimise with countries

DE-STALINISATION

  1. Khrushchev attacked Stalins stigma
  2. he stopped the paranoia over him
  3. collectivism wasnt as strong
  4. met with American and Uk leaders

INEFFECTIVE: countries were able to gain more control over affairs. relations with the west improved and so there was more influence which meant communsim wasnt as strong.

POLAND UPRISING 1956

  1. Granted more refroms unlike Hungary
  2. had a trusted leader which didnt undermine or threaten communism
  3. was used to avoid full scale attack to combat communism
  4. didnt push the boat out too far

HOWEVER: THE HUNGARY UPRISING SHOWED THAT UPRSINGS COULD BE STOPPED.

DIFFERENT ROADS TO SOCIALISM

  1. COMINFORM was shut down and this meant people views were less restrictive
  2. Khrushchev believed that countries should develop own paths of socialism

CONCLUSION: communsim was not so strictly enforced on poeples rights however the COMECON and thw WARSAW pact still existed
