How does the substrate concentration influence the chemical reaction

What happens to the rate of reaction if the level of enzymes remain constant

• The rate of reaction will increase as the concentration of substrate increases… upto a certain point!

Why is this the case

• If all the active sites are working flat out, there is no where for the increasing levels of substrate to go (To many keys not enough locks)

Why is this important in industry

• If scientist use enzymes to catalyse a reaction which produces a product
• They need to understand how much substrate to add, too ensure it works
• and they dont want to add too much because they would be spending more money than they need to on the surplus
