Define space.
A location with no social connections for people.
Define place.
A portion of geographic space with a distinctive identity that has a meaning to people.
What is the difference between space and place?
Places is the subjective meaning of a place, whereas space is the objective meaning of a place.
What is an endogenous factor?
An internal factor which shapes a place’s character, e.g. its land use, or demographic.
What is an exogenous factor?
An external factor, which shapes a place’s character, e.g its relationship with another place.
What two types of data can be used to define a place’s identity?
Subjective and objective data.
What are some socio-economic factors that can affect a place’s identity?
Health care, Education, Housing, Income, Family status or standards of living.
What are some demographic factors that can affect a place’s identity?
No. of people, Birth/ Death rate, Age, Gender, Ethnicity.
What parts of a person’s identity can affect their perception of a place?
Age, Gender, Religion, Sexuality, Role and Emotional Attatchment.
What is emotional attatchment?
It is a individual and personal feeling towards a place, shaped by memories, such as childhood memories, illness, past holidays etc…
How could a good holiday affect someone’s perception of a place?
It could cause emotional attatchment to that place, relating it to the good holdiay whenever they think of it, and giving them a very good perception of said place.
How could a dead relative dying in a hospital affect someone’s perception of the hospital?
They could always relate the hospital to their relative’s death, causing them to have a much more negative perception of it than they would have had otherwise.
Why is emotional attatchent harder to adress when marketing a place than other factors of someone’s identity?
Emotional attatchment is an individual and personal feeling, that is tough to change.
