Changing Places - Shifting Flows Flashcards
How have the factors that affect places changed over time?
Historically places were more heavily affected by local (endogenous) factors, however more recently, external (exogenous) factors have begun to significantly affect places.
Improvements to transport and communications have increased flows of what?
People
Money
Resources
Ideas
How have shifting flows of people caused Demographic change?
Shifting flows of people have on a local scale caused towns to lose younger people, as they move to larger cities to find better work and sometimes for more affordable housing. On an international scale, large scale south to north migration has caused some developing countries to lose many young males, shifting the gender balance in these places.
How have shifting flows of money and investment caused demographic change?
Flows of money and investment can change the characteristics of a place, making some places more attractive to people, which can increase the population in an area significantly, e.g. the London Docklands has had a double in population between 1981 and the early 21st century.
How have shifting flows of ideas and resources caused demographic change?
Ideas such as birth control can flow to a place and affect demographic characteristics, e.g. lowering birth rate and affecting population size. (e.g. International organisations such as UNFPA set up to spread ideas about birth control, as well as supplying resourfes to aid birth control.)
How have shifting flows of people affected cultural characteristics of place?
New people moving to a place, or even visiting it can bring theri culture with them, which can change the characteristics of that place. E.g. the UK experienced mass international migrations from India, Pakistan and other commonwealth countries, creating multi-ethnic communities in many places.
How have shifting flows of money, investment and ideas affected cultural characteristics of place?
New cultural ideas introduced to places can change the characteristics of those places, for example, fast food companies such as KFC and McDonalds have seen rapid growth in China, changing eating habits in the country as a result.
How have shifting flows of people affected economic characteristics of place?
Increasing flows of people to a destination can change the economic characteristics of those places, e.g. St. Ives which has become a popular tourist destination, altering the types of jobs available to service based jobs in hospitality, shops and resturants.
How have shifting flows of resources affected economic characteristics of place?
The outward flow of local producs or natural resources can have a large impact on local economies, with local products now being sold to global markets, e.g. Scottish whisky has grown to be one of the largest industries in Scotland due to interntational exports. This has brought employment and money to a wide range of places in Scotland where distilleries are located.
How have shifting flows of money and investment affected economic charactersitics of place?
Shifting flows of money and investment have had both positive and negative effects,
Postive: Inward flows of investment can have positive effects on the place, e.g. the finance industry in London. created many high value service sector jobs and made it a wealthy place.
Negative: Reduced investment and competition from global markets has lead to the decline in primary industries in the UK, damaging some place’s economies.
