How Did Science And Technology Contribute To Further Change In Weapons Flashcards
How did muskets change?
Introduction of the flintlock musket in 1610.
Quicker, less dangerous and slightly more reliable than matchlocks
More expensive so only small number of troops where armoured with them
How did the pistol change?
General knowledge: Smaller and lighter so operated by Calvary
WHEELLOCK firing mechanism around 1500 allows for a pistol to be fired with one hand
More expensive, complicated and unreliable
Replaced by SNAPHAUNCE pistol
From 1560’s which was an early flintlock design
Proper, more reliable flintlock pistols were introduced in 1610’s
Still weren’t used alot due to unreliability and short range
How did the cannon change !
Technological advancements which affected the cannon included
- cast iron industry growing which created new possibilities to manufacture on a large scale
- changes to cannon design made it possible to alter range and rate of fire so more useful on battlefield
- lightweight cannons called field guns developed so easier to transport and more useful on battlefield
However they continued to have limited range and poor accuracy
What are some continuities in weapons?
Due to limitations of the matchlock musket it didn’t immediately replace traditional weapons
Pikes continued to be very important ( one third of infantry equipped with one in 1640)
Sword and even lances continue to be the weapon of choice for most cavalry despite pistols also being used
