Yes, as muskets became widely used they had serious limitations on rate, range and accuracy so they would be flanked by pikemen
In square formations they are only effective if done right and it’s harder than it looks to stay in formation so it required a lot of discipline among soldiers and constant practice but could be easily achieved a professional army
