- order of the garter
- kings council
- royal patronage
Why did Henry give out the order of the garter
Every noble wanted the order of the garter but Henry didn’t have to give anything away for it
King’s Council
Kings closest advisors.
Most meetings attended by small inner circle
Royal Patronage
giving out land, titles and privileges to nobles that supported Henry
Purpose of act of attainder
- could condemn a noble for treason in his absence
- used as a justification for Henry to confiscate Yorkist land
purpose of bonds and recognisances
- Squeezed income out of the nobles - less money lessened their power
- At the mercy of Henry if they failed to pay their debts thus the power balance tipped in Henry’s favour
Purpose of controlling titles
- prevented any noble from being to powerful - no kingmaker
- Could punish Yorkist families for rebelling against him - duchy of Buckingham
