How Cells Use ATP to Do Work Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three ways cells use ATP to do work?
A
Chemical work, mechanical work, transport work
2
Q
How do cells use ATP in chemical work?
A
Building a large molecule
The phosphate acts like a dynamite and pops off allowing another atom to latch on.
3
Q
How do cells use ATP in mechanical work?
A
Moving a muscle protein. ADP + Phosphate
The phosphate acts like a dynamite and moves a protein even a few micro meters.
4
Q
How do cells use ATP in transport work?
A
Pumping substances through membranes.
The phosphate allows the transport protein to inflate and create a temporary vacum to suck in molecules. This moves molecules from areas of high concentration to low concentration.
