Housing Problems+solutions In Rio Flashcards
Problems include:
Rapid growth of Rio.
People move to Rio with expectations- stable job, being able to provide education for children, but they find this is not possible.
People unable to find jobs for money.
No housing options- end up in shanty towns- continuously happens- shanty towns grow.
Housing conditions:
Houses made of cheap materials- cardboard, wood- materials unfit to endure harsh weather.
Houses built in dangerous locations such as roundabouts and usually steep cliffs/hillsides- prone to landslides
- Project Rocinha
Project focused on 2 issues- rubbish collection and sanitation improvements.
Idea was to improve health and quality of life for residents eg life expectancy would increase and infant mortality rates would decrease.
Self help schemes
Local residents given basic materials to build houses eg breeze blocks, sinks etc
Local people had to build houses for themselves
Advantages includes:
- less costly for authorities
- local people developed skills eg brick laying- led to the multiplier effect ie people had money to spend in local shops.
- sense of community spirit meant areas were improved and regularly looked after
- 75% houses in Rocinha now of brick construction.
Project Cingapura
Idea was to build high density flats on the outskirts of Rio- people were promised modern amenities such as sanitation, electricity eg.
Downside was residents had to pay $60 to move in and $30 monthly rent- beyond the reach of many. Lead to shanty towns built next to flats- take advantage of modern infrastructure eg roads
