Household Electricity Flashcards
What is an alternating current
One that is constantly changing direction
What is mains electricity
An A.C supply in the UK it has a frequency of 50 cycles per second
And is 230 V
What are most electrical appliances connected to
The mains using cable and three pin plug
What happens if an electrical fault causes too great a current
The circuit is disconnected by a fuse or a circuit breaker in the live wire
When the current in a fuse wire exceeds the rating of the fuse what happens
It will melt, breaking the circuit
What are some circuits protected by
RCCBS
What do RCCBS do
Detect a difference in the current between and live and neutral wires
Appliances with metal cases are what
Usually earthed
What do the earth wife and fuse do together
Protect the wiring of the circuit
What do cells and batteries supply
Current that always passes in the same direction
Called the direct current
What happens when an electrical charge flows through a resistor
The resistor gets hot
