Host Pathogen Interactions Flashcards
What is a pathogen?
An infectious agent that has the ABILITY to cause disease.
What is a strict pathogen?
ALWAYS pathogenic, never part of normal microbiota.
What is a commensal?
Part of the normal microbiota.
What is the infectious dose?
The number of organisms required to cause disease.
Are latent infections contagious?
No.
What are the resevoirs of infection?
Environment, Infected person or animals, and self
What are the benefits to biofilm formation?
Strength in numbers, resistance to antimicrobials, protection from physiochemical changes and host defenses, genetic exchange.
What is a toxin?
A bacterial product that is released to affect host cells at a distance; Bacteria do not need to be present at the site of action.
What are the types of toxins?
Endotoxin and Exotoxin.
What is an endotoxin?
Produced only by Gram-; LPS
What is an exotoxin?
Protein that is released from the bacterial cell that is toxic for target cells or animals; Not unique to Gram+ or Gram-
