Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD
formerly known as Sterile Processing Department)
- Wash, clean and sterilize hospital equipment
Examples: bed pans, humidifiers, air mattresses & pumps, urinals, breast pump parts, wash basins
- Wash soiled equipment and deliver clean equipment to the Nursing Units & OR
- Sterilize and assemble Procedural Trays with the correct instruments.
thoracentesis tray
Used by Physician for withdrawal of excess fluid from the thoracic cavity.
paracentesis tray
For withdrawal of excess fluid form the abdominal cavity.
pelvic tray
Used by Physician for pelvic examinations.
biopsy tray (Bx)
Used by Physicians to remove a small specimen of tissue for microscopic examination.
bone marrow tray
Used by Physicians to obtain a specimen of bone marrow.
cutdown tray
Used by Physician’s to expose a vein when one cannot be found to start an IV
jugular insertion tray
To insert a Central line for TPN (total parenteral nutrition) to be infused

Function of the maintenance department
Responsible for continuous upkeep of the hospital. There is an online maintenance request system

Biomedical Engineering
Generally days
6 functions of the Biomedical Engineering department
- Inspect new equipment to ensure they meet standards
- Provide regular maintenance of all medical devices
- Provide repair service for all medical devices
- Provide training and support on medical device use for staff
- Assist in investigation of incidents that concern medical equipment
- Ensure all medical devices are disposed of safely when they are no longer required
6 functions of the Volunteers
- One to one visiting to provide social and mental stimulation
- Provide programs such as Pets & Friends
- Act as hosts / liaisons between, patients, their families, visitors, and staff
ex. ER - provide information and assistance to waiting patients, Surgical Day Care, Medical Imaging, Outpatient Clinics, Cancer Centre, Diabetic Daycare - Fundraising - gift shop, lotto booth
- Library cart - provide reading material to patient rooms and hospital waiting areas
- Hairdressing
6 functions of Food and Nutrition Services
- Prepare, assemble and deliver meals
- Provide nutritional care for inpatient in outpatient settings
- Dieticians provide educational opportunities and conduct nutrition research
- Retail services such as cafeteria and vending
- Testing for quality assurance, acceptability and meeting standards
- Comprised of managers, dieticians, supervisors, diet technicians, production staff & food service workers
3 functions of Pastoral Services
- Spiritual care denominational list is available on line for each site
- Upon request trained spiritual care volunteers are available
- On call clergy from local religious faith groups are available upon request. Process and resources will vary from site to site.
Interpreter Services
Facilitate spoken language communication between individuals or groups who do not share a common language
Staff Scheduling
Filling staff vacancies according to contractual obligations and unique program needs

- Health record services
- Scanning and archiving
- Release of information, protect patient privacy and confidentiality
2 functions of Housekeeping
- Unit Clerk contacts the housekeeping call centre for service requests and advises of name, position, hospital, unit, room #
- Types of requests: discharges, isolation cleaning requirements, spills

- Contact centralized call centre for lost items
- Items are picked up daily, bagged & tagged with date & time found with originating location & details of contents
- Items not claimed within 3 months could be donated to the auxiliary of discarded
