What are you supposed to do during a code red?
a) Dial code number for Switchboard
b) State “Code Red and location”
c) Follow R.A.C.E. protocol
R - Rescue/remove persons from immediate danger
A - Activate the fire alarm
C - Control the spread of smoke and flame by closing all doors and windows in the area
E - Extinguish the fire only if safe to do so
d) Take directions from overhead announcements, fire department personnel or runners
e) Do not attempt to use elevators
f) The “Code Red all clear” announcement indicates the facility may resume normal activities
What are you supposed to do during a code blue?
a) Dial code for Switchboard
- State “Code Blue and location”
- Some units have a code alert button in the unit and the individual patient rooms
b) Direct the code arrest team to the patient’s room
- Interchangeable with step c
c) Ensure the access route is clear and without obstacles
- Interchangeable with step b
d) Have the patient’s chart ready for any team members that will require it
e) Notify all Physicians connected with the patient’s care as directed by the RN
f) Pull up patient’s electronic record in order to process all STAT orders including blood work, ECG, x-ray
g) For a successful code, follow the procedure for a transfer to another unit, if instructed to do so
h) For an unsuccessful code, follow the procedure for postmortem care

Assist as trained to do so or as directed
What are you supposed to do during a code yellow?
Refer to missing patient/resident description, search area
What are you supposed to do during a code green?
Prepare to assist with evacuation and/or receive patients in your work area
What are you supposed to do during a code orange?
Activate functional area or departmental plan as directed
What are you supposed to do during a code black?
Give assistance as directed, conduct a visual search of your area for unusual objects

Keep yourself and others away from spill
