What is the definition of hospital-associated infection?
A
any infectious event diagnosed >48hrs after hospital admission

What risk factors exist for hospital-acquired infections?
A
Prolonged length of hospital stay, mechanical ventilation, and indwelling devices (i.e., intravascular or urinary catheters and nasogastric or endotracheal tubes)
intravenous catheterization, surgical procedures, antimicrobial drugs given other than perioperatively, anti-ulcer medication and duration of hospitalization
