Bacterial Infections Flashcards
Bacterial Infections
Chapter 91 CCM 3rd edition
What is the difference between gram pos and gram neg in structure?
Gram-positive bacteria (purple on Gram stain) thick outer cell wall made of peptidoglycan and a single inner phospholipid membrane
Gram-negative bacteria (pink) have outer and inner phospholipid membranes that surround a thin layer of peptidoglycan in the periplasmic space. The outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria is covered with lipopolysaccharide LPS - Toll-like receptor 4.
How may bacterial injections be Dx
Elisa, PCR, culture, (cytology?)
Should fluroquinolones be utilised in streptococcal infections
No - because of clinical inefficacy and potential for bacteriophage activation.
