Hoses, Hydrants & Water supplies, Branches & Adaptors Flashcards

1
Q

Requirements of a good hose?

7

A

Be reliable in use

Be resistant to bursting, leaking, chemical damage or kinking when passed around bends/corners

Should not stretch excessively when pressurised(5% max in length) and not expand (10% max in diameter)

Should be light and easy to handle. Able to be made up wet or dry

Should be smooth surfaced internally to keep frictional loss to a minimum

Should be capable of withstanding pressure to changes and shock

19
Q

5 types of hoses are?

A

45mm & 70mm

90mm

150mm

Hosereel hose

Hard suction hose

20
Q

Two types of hose couplings?

A

Instantaneous coupling

Storz couplings

21
Q

Hose identification - what are the four colour coded Bandit strap and what does it indicate?

A

Yellow - Southern

Orange - Eastern

Green - Western

Black - Training centres

22
Q

What does the unique ID number attached to the bandit strap consist of?

A

Three digit station call sign

Four digit ID number

Single digit relating to the diameter of the hose
(E.g 7 = 70mm & 4 = 45mm)

23
Q

Care and repair of hose - what rules should be observed?

A

Hose should be ramped when laid across a road

Hose should not be kinked when under pressure

Hose should not be made up when frozen

Hose should be under-run and cleaned before stowing

24
Q

When should hoses be tested?

A

On acceptance

After operational use

Annually

25
Q

All hydrants have to conform to a British standard and have the following features which are?

(3)

A

65mm round thread outlet to enable the attachment of our standpipes

Minimum water flow of 2000 litres per minute(lpm) at a pressure of 1.7 bar, with water flowing

Anti clockwise opening

26
Q

Hydrant plates are coloured yellow with a large ‘H’ in black lettering..

What else will hydrant plates have on them?

(4)

A

The plate will show wether the hydrant is a single or double

The number between the arms of the ‘H’ is the size of the main in inches or millimetres

The number between the legs of the ‘H’ is the distance to the hydrant from the plate in feet or metres

Some plates give directions to the nearest hydrant

27
Q

Hydrant gear consists of?

A

Standpipe, key and bar

28
Q

Two basic designs of leak detection devices are?

A

Magnetic
(Can be removed safely & replaced after the hydrant has been shut down)

Screw on
(Should not be refitted but left at bottom of the pit. The water office should be informed)

29
Q

When are hydrants tested?

A

A visual inspection should be undertaken yearly

All hydrants should be tested every four years to make sure they are available for use. This is carried out between April and September

30
Q

What are the 3 types of branches?

A

Rosenbauer RB 101

Rosenbauer Project2

Ultimatic hosereel branch

31
Q

What are the flow rates of the rosenbauer RB 101

4

A

130lpm, 230lpm, 300lpm, 400lpm

32
Q

The specified bars for all flow settings on a rosenbauer RB 101 is?

A

6 bars

  • however can still operate effectively down to 3 bars if the optimum pressure cannot be achieved
33
Q

Which branch is designed to provide a combination of a solid core jet or spray at the same time?

A

Rosenbauer Project2

34
Q

Rosenbauer Project2 has an effective working pressure range between what?

Has a throw of?

A

3.5 bar and 7 bars

57meters

35
Q

At 7 bar, the rosenbauer Project2 jet of …..lpm and a max flow rate of ….. lpm with the jet and spray combined

A

630lpm

930lpm

36
Q

Te ultimatic hosereel branch has a flow rate of

A

115-150lpm with either 19mm or 45mm hose attached

37
Q

What is used to extinguish chimney fires?

A

Chimney nozzle

38
Q

What are ground monitors?

A

A type of branch designed to operate unattended at ground level

(Akron mercury ground monitor) is a type of ground monitor

39
Q

When are ground monitors used when?

A

A larger volume of water or foam is required than can be provided by hand controlled branches

Operations require extinguishing media to be thrown a greater distance

Operations require extinguishing media over long time periods in the same area of operations, for example foam attack, cooling of surfaces, large fires

40
Q

The Akron mercury ground monitor has a choice of three nozzles which are?

A

1) a variable flow rate variable jet/spray water deployment nozzle, which delivers water at flow rates of 950lpm, 1400lpm and 1900lpm
2) a single flow rate deluge nozzle, which delivers water at a flow rate of 1750lpm
3) a single flow rate foam nozzle, which delivers pre-mixed, aspirated foam at a flow rate of 950lpm

41
Q

Two types of hose adapters

A

Hosereel adaptor

90mm hose adaptor kit

42
Q

Hosereel adaptor enables…

A

A length of hose to be connected to a standard 65mm instantaneous outlet and then connecting 70/45mm hose

43
Q

90mm hose adaptor kit is used for…

A

Connecting Storz couplings to standard instantaneous couplings

44
Q

90mm hose adaptor kit consists of?

A

A 90mm hose tail. This is a 2m length of 90mm hose, with a Storz coupling at one end and a female instantaneous coupling at the other end

An instantaneous coupling to storz coupling adaptor

Carried in red NATO box

(2 are carried on pumping appliances)
