HORT Test 1: Week 2 (Aug 29) Flashcards
Plant anatomy
Flowering plant anatomy
What is a cell?
The basic unit of life in all living organisms
Plant cells are surrounded by a cell wall which provides….
Strength and shape to the cell
What are all plant cells?
All plant cells are eukaryotic (containing a nucleus) within a complex fluid called the cytoplasm (cytosol) that also contains multiple specialized structures called organelles that carry out specific functions

Who discovered the cell wall?
Robert Hooke in 1665
What is the cell wall composed of?
A tough layer external to the cell membrane that is composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, lignin, and glycoproteins
What is the primary function of the cell wall?
To protect and provide structural support to the cell as well as protect-the cell against mechanical stress
What does the cell wall filter?
The cell wall filters the molecules passing in and out of the cell.
The cell wall is composed of 3 layers:
- Primary
Mostly made of cellulose - Secondary
Mostly comprised of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin - Middle Lamella
Mostly made of pectic substance (glue-like) that hold together adjecent cells in a tissue
