Hormones Flashcards
Features of the Endocrine System (hormones)
Slow speed of transmission Chemical Via blood (dissolved in plasma) Only target cells respond but its sent all over the body Controls long term processes
Features of the Nervous System
Fast speed of transmission Electrical impulse Along neurones Message sent directly to target cells Used when a fast response is needed
What hormone does the Pancreas produce?
Insulin
What hormone do the Testis produce?
Testosterone
What hormones does the ovary produce?
Oestrogen, and Progesterone
What hormone does the Adrenal glands produce?
Adrenaline
What hormones does the Pituitry gland produce?
ADH (anti diuretic hormone), FSH, and LH
What is the role of Insulin in the body?
Causes liver and muscles to take up glucose and convert it to glycogen for storage (controls levels of glucose in the blood)
What is the role of ADH in the body?
Reduces the amount of water lost in urine
What is the role of Oestrogen in the body?
Stimulates uterus lining to develop and development of secondary female characteristics
What is the role of Progesterone in the body?
Maintains uterus lining and controls development of secondary female characteristics
What is the role of Testosterone in the body?
Stimulates development of male secondary sexual characteristics
What is the role of Adrenaline in the body?
Increases heart and breathing rate for fight or flight action
What is the role of FSH in the body?
Stimulates an egg to mature in the ovary
What is the role of LH in the body?
Stimulates the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation)
